In designing these creatures, I wanted to have a product that crossed all ages, but that held its roots in one of our most natural instincts: our connection to animals. Why do we relate to certain animals? Why do different animals mean different things to us as a society or as individuals? Sometimes it’s a joke or a ridiculous meaning. Sometimes it has deeper roots and we might not fully understand it ourselves. From cobras to lions to t-rexes and cranes, there is something for everyone.
I paper maché over mixed media because it combines the artist’s intent with the attitude of the piece itself. The strong, durable characteristics of the final product lends itself to a variety of projects. Although you may have done paper maché in 4th grade, there is a whole world of artists who have developed this versatile and often under-rated medium farther than many would imagine possible.
